Breast cancer patients have the highest mortality rate compared to other cancers in Bangladesh. Studies have shown that every 6 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in our country and every 11 minutes a woman dies of breast cancer.

What is breast cancer?

The English name of breast cancer is Breast Cancer. Breast cancer occurs when the cells inside a woman's breast grow uncontrollably. When some cells grow abnormally inside the breast, these irregular and extra cells divide to form a solid lump or tumor.

When these tumor cells spread to different parts of the body, including lymph or blood vessels, the risk of developing breast cancer is high. Generally, women in Bangladesh are at high risk of developing breast cancer between 25 and 35 years or after 40 years.


Causes of breast cancer

Breast cancer is caused by several significant factors. The reasons are discussed below:

Lifestyle changes:

Doctors and researchers claim that breast cancer is mainly caused by lifestyle changes. Women are more likely to be affected by this cancer due to more changes in their daily life.

Lack of awareness:

Women are not aware of their body because they are busy in family life. Due to lack of awareness, they do not care about diseases. So experts mention it as a reason for breast cancer.

Lack of exercise and physical activity:

Nowadays most of the people are addicted to different types of digital devices including mobile phone, TV. Physical work is less for that. This is more common in women. As a result, women suffer from excess obesity. One of the causes of breast cancer is excess obesity.

Intake of junk food:

Nowadays we eat a lot of fast food leaving out balanced food. As a result, our nutritional deficiency is not met properly. If this is the case, there is a possibility of breast cancer.

Late pick-up:

Most women these days have children late. Most women want to have children after 30 years. Many types of complex diseases appear in the body if the child is born late. If this is the case, the chances of getting this cancer are high.

Expressing reluctance to breastfeed the baby:

Most of the mothers these days do not want to breastfeed their babies or those who work cannot breastfeed their babies due to lack of time. All these women have a high risk of breast cancer.

Spots on the armpits:

If there are moles in the armpits, there is a possibility of getting breast cancer.

Birth Control Pills:

If a woman has been using contraceptives or birth control pills for a long time, she is at risk of developing breast cancer.

Alcohol consumption:

Drinking alcohol also causes breast cancer.

 

How do you know if you have breast cancer?

The following symptoms are usually seen when affected by breast cancer:

Formation of a hard lump under the breast or armpit: Breast cancer can cause lumps or lumps in the breast or under the armpits. If this lump is firm and does not change its position easily, it is more likely to develop breast cancer. If this is the case, you must consult a doctor.

Abnormal breast swelling: If any part of the breast becomes abnormally swollen or if the breast is felt, there is a possibility of breast cancer.

Breast rash: Usually, if there is breast cancer, the color of the skin of the breast becomes red or there is a rash.

Change in breast size: Breast cancer usually causes changes in the size and shape of the breast.

Penetration of breast skin: If the skin of the breast goes inward like a hole, it is one of the symptoms of breast cancer.

Nipple penetration: This cancer can invade the nipple.

Bleeding from nipples: In case of breast cancer, the nipples bleed or discharge fluid.


What types of tests are used to diagnose breast cancer?

Doctors diagnose breast cancer through the following tests, depending on the patient's cancer symptoms and age.

  • Mammography
  • Ultrasonography
  • FNAC
  • MRI
  • Biopsy, etc.


What to do if breast cancer?

Generally, doctors treat breast cancer by adopting the following methods.

Surgery:

Surgery is the first step in the breast cancer treatment process. If this cancer is detected in the early stages, the doctors take out the tumor from inside the breast by surgery.

Lumpectomy:

Usually if the tumor is small in size then the doctors do this operation. In this method, the tumor and some tissues around it are cut and operated.

Mastectomy:

In this operation, the doctors cut the entire breast of the patient and the adjacent affected tissues including the armpit lymph nodes, muscles under the breast are cut and thrown away.

Radiotherapy:

Typically, this method uses a large machine to direct radiation into the body to destroy cancer cells. Doctors also treat by placing radioactive materials inside the body.

Chemotherapy:

Chemotherapy destroys cancer cells. It works as a medicine to destroy cancer cells. Doctors give chemotherapy to prevent the cancer from reoccurring and spreading throughout the body. If the tumor is too large, doctors try to reduce the size of the tumor before surgery. The risk of recurrence of cancer is greatly reduced by giving chemotherapy.


What are the ways to prevent breast cancer?

If the following rules are followed properly, it can be possible to reduce the risk of breast cancer to a great extent without medication.

Raising awareness:

Breast cancer is mainly caused by lifestyle changes and lack of awareness. Most of the women spend more time taking care of the family and as a result are not aware of their body. If any disease occurs in the body, they do not take it seriously or do not want to talk about it with shame. Doctors said that first of all, awareness should be increased.

Develop daily exercise habits:

People who do daily exercise and physical activity have a lower risk of developing breast cancer. For this reason physical exercise should be done for about 30-40 minutes every day. And also should do more physical activity without sitting for a long time in one place. As a result, the blood circulation in our body is correct.

Controlling body weight:

One of the leading causes of breast cancer in women is excess body weight. Therefore, if you control your body weight, it is possible to reduce the risk of getting this cancer to a large extent. So you should avoid eating all the foods that increase body weight. You should refrain from eating excess oil-fatty food, junk food.

Consuming fibrous foods:

Fiber foods are very beneficial in preventing breast cancer or any cancer. These foods contain estrogen which helps reduce the risk of developing cancer. Green leafy vegetables such as date vegetables, cauliflower, cabbage, beans, fresh fruits should be eaten more. You can also eat onions and garlic regularly. Onion, garlic are more effective in preventing cancer and eating them raw is more beneficial.

Breastfeeding the baby:

One of the reasons women get breast cancer is because they don't want to breastfeed their babies. Therefore, to be protected from cancer, the child should be breastfed regularly.

Avoiding sweet foods:

If you want to prevent breast cancer, you should first avoid eating sugar or sweet foods. Because sugar helps cancer cells grow. For this, sugary foods should be avoided.

Drinking green tea:

Green tea is very effective in preventing breast cancer. Greens contain a compound called EGCG that helps stop the growth of cancer cells.

Consuming good fats:

Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids help prevent breast cancer. Fish oil is good. It contains Omega-3 fatty acids.

Quit smoking and drinking:

People who smoke and drink regularly have a higher risk of developing breast cancer. That is why you should stop yourself from smoking and drinking alcohol. And keep yourself away from people who smoke.

Generally, women are more likely to develop breast cancer after the age of 20. So we have to be careful about ourselves from the age of 20 years or earlier. From this time breast should be examined at a certain time every month. It is usually best to do this test 5-7 days after the start of the period.

This test can be done by yourself at home to see if there are any lumps or lumps in the breast. If this happens, you must consult a doctor. Because breast cancer can be easily prevented if caught in the early stages.

But if you ignore these things first, then there is a possibility that this cancer germ will spread throughout the body. This can lead to death of patients due to breast cancer in women.
